Prince Eunsin

Prince Eunsin (Korean: 은신군; Hanja: 恩信君; January 11, 1755 – March 29, 1771), personal name Yi Jin (Korean: 이진; Hanja: 李禛), was a royal family member of the Joseon dynasty. He was the son of Crown Prince Sado and the foster son of Prince Nakcheon.[1]

Life

Prince Eunsin was the second illegitimate son of Crown Prince Sado, born from the Royal Noble Consort Suk of the Buan Im clan.[1] He was the younger brother of Prince Euneon and half-brother of Crown Prince Uiso, King Jeongjo, and Prince Eunjeon.[1]

In 1762, when his father was executed by King Yeongjo for treason, he was left unprotected and in poverty. He and his brother, Prince Euneon, had to borrow money from merchants and Hong Bong-han, and overtime gained a substantial debt.

On February 2, 1771, King Yeongjo sent him to exile in Daejeong town in Jeju Island.[1] While in exile, he was married to Lady Hong, and the two had no issues. On March 29, 1771, he became sick from an epidemic and died at the age of 16.

Post-death

In December 1777, he was posthumously reinstated to his former standing by his half-brother King Jeongjo, but only after he was adopted by Prince Nakcheon, a cousin of his fathers.

On December 12, 1779, he was posthumously given the title of Duke of Somin (소민공; 昭愍公; Somin gong), whis was changed to Duke of Chungheon (충헌공; 忠獻公; Chungheon gong) on February 28, 1871.
