Primary elections in Honduras The primary elections in Honduras, are mechanisms through which the political parties of the country choose their presidential candidates, they are made during the third year of government of the current government, specifically the second Sunday of March of every four years in the same year eight months before the general elections according to the amendment to article 113 of the Electoral Law of Honduras carried out in 2014. These are not mandatory or paid for by the state. The Supreme Electoral Tribunal of Honduras is the regulator of this process, the National Registry of Persons is a support body that gives legitimacy to the electoral process.

History

The origin of primary elections date back to 1824, after Honduras gained independence from Spain and Mexico. This is when several groups presented the candidates for their own parties, the first case being the selection of the candidates for the first head of state of Honduras, Dionisio de Herrera where by constituent assembly was elected as head of state to Herrera. During his government, the first Honduran constitution was created, which serves as the basis for law in Honduras.[1]

General elections

After knowing the presidential candidates, they contend for the presidency during the general elections that take place a year after the primary elections and a few months before the end of the current government.
