Panzer Paladin

Panzer Paladin is an upcoming side-scrolling action platformer developed and published by Tribute Games.[1] In this 8-bit style game, the player is in control either as the strong power armor called the Paladin or as the small but swift Squire pilot named Flame, fighting and slaying demons by using their weapons against them. It draws inspiration from NES games such as Zelda II, Mega Man and Blaster Master.[2][3]

Gameplay

In this 8-bit style game, the player is in control either as the strong power armor called the Paladin or as the small but swift Squire pilot. As the Paladin, the player can pick up melee weapons dropped by defeated enemies. The swordplay mechanic includes high versus low attacking and blocking and a rock-paper-scissor weapon type system that grants attack bonuses.[5][6][7] It is also possible to cast different types of spells by breaking weapons.[8]

The player may also eject from the power armor and play as the small Squire pilot. The Squire wields a laser whip and can swing and attack enemies at a distance.[5] The whip can also be used to recharge the Paladin's energy.[8]

Synopsis

Legions of demons led by the evil Ravenous have invaded Earth, and are ready for battle. The current circumstance seems bleak, but humanity has one hope and that is the Paladin, a mech power armor. A rescue android named Flame becomes a Squire and is chosen to pilot a Paladin called Grit. Her mission to find and defeat all of the evil Weapon Keepers and eventually Ravenous himself. The showdown between the forces of the occult and the power of cutting-edge technology has begun! [9]

Development

Tribute Games, developer and publisher of Panzer Paladin, announced the game title with promotional art and first screenshots on March 13, 2019.[8][10] Concerning early development, game designer and art director Jonathan Lavigne has stated in a press release: "For a long time I wanted to make a NES-style game with swordplay mechanics like the ones from Zelda II on NES. Panzer Paladin is the culmination of two subjects I wanted to address in a traditional platformer: swordplay and mechas. A strong aspect I also wanted to include in this project is the various usage of an array of weapons. A little bit like in our previous title Mercenary Kings".[8] The developers are planning on including around 100 different kinds of weapons in the game.[11]

The prototype of Panzer Paladin was showcased for the first time at PAX East 2019.[5][7] The game release was planned for Spring 2020.[1] Tribute Games has yet to announce on which platform Panzer Paladin will be available.[3]
