Pannur
Pannur is a village in Thiruvallur district, Tamil Nadu.[1]
The village is in Tamil Nadu and a majority of the populace are Roman Catholics and Kamma Naidus/ Chowdhury with Telugu-speakers.
Pannur village has contributed one bishop, and many number of priests and nuns to serve to humanity throughout the world in the fields of social work, hospital management and educational institution.
Pannur is a 300-year-old village. Telugu-speaking community from Guntur district (Andhra Pradesh), migrated around 1700 AD and settled initially in Kilacheri (around 8 km from the village) and subsequently a group moved to Pannur.
The Church of 'Our Lady Of Good Health', 150 years old, is located at the centre of the village. Pannur celebrates the festival of Our Lady Of Health on 31 May.
There is an elementary school for boys and girls named after St. Annes, being managed by the Sisters of St. Annes.
The Salesians of Don Bosco manage a school which was established as apostolic school and for the welfare of the poor children from nearby localities like anthoniyaar puram, susaipuram, pannur and other local villages which imparts Tamil- and English-medium education for children up to class 12th . Don Bosco higher secondary education school was established in Pannur in 1958, with the help of then village President Shri. Bashyam Jacob Naidu, a great Salesian priest Rev. Fr. Ittyatchan S.D., and the village parish priest Rev. Fr. D. Joseph D.D. The first SSLC batch passed out in 1962.
Since 1953 Pannur was a landmark for the traders like groundnut, paddy, and ragi. The first rice mill in Pannur was the Bashyam rice mill, a Bashyam family mill managed by Shri. Bashyam Royappa Naidu, brother of Shri. Bashyam Jacob Naidu. Later, a second rice mill was established by Bashyam Balaiah Naidu along with Malapati Joseph Naidu(Father of Malapati Sebastian Naidu) and another rice mill called St.Joseph Modern Rice mill was established by shri. Malapati Sebastian naidu. These rice mills helped the villagers who had agruculture as their prime source of income. Many landlords such as Tharigopala Jaianna Naidu donated their lands for good cause and the church. In those days it was a very beautiful Telugu village and people all belonged to the same community. There was a relationship between each and everyone in the village where everyone was related to each other. Pannur is included in the list of suburb in Chennai (New Chennai)
Pannur is located on the state highway connecting Thiruvallur and Kanchipuram and is 55 km from Chennai city.
Agriculture has been the main source of income, till the 1960s and 70s. From the 1960s, many youngsters with better educational facilities commenced working as teachers and few joined government services. Since the 1990s, many youngsters acquired professional degrees, Engineers and Doctors and joined the services of leading software and corporate companies. This led to migration to cities such as Chennai, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Mumbai, Baroda, Delhi, etc., and many people have migrated to US, UK, Australia, Ireland, Dubai, Middle East, Switzerland, France, Netherlands, Canada, Germany, Singapore, etc.
Pannur is considered to be one of the most developed villages in the district.it one part of thiruppandiyur village.
