Omegaverse

Omegaverse is a subgenre of speculative erotic fiction, and originally a subgenre of erotic fan fiction ("slash fiction"). Its premise is that humans are either dominant "alphas", neutral "betas" or submissive "omegas".[1] This terminology is derived from the one used in ethology to describe social hierarchies in animals (see Alpha (ethology)).

Other common aspects of Omegaverse fiction include wolf-like or other animal-like behavior in humans, especially as pertains to sex. These include the rut, pheromonal attraction between alphas and omegas, penises with knots ("knotting"),[1] pack structures and breeding.[2] Male omegas are also often conceived of as being able to become pregnant.[1] Omegaverse fiction often features other fantasy elements such as the presence of werewolves or other fantastical creatures.[1]

These tropes of the subgenre were established in fan fiction about the U.S. TV series Supernatural in the 2010s.[1] They quickly became popular – the fan fiction website Archive of Our Own featured some 70,000 Omegaverse stories in 2020 – and evolved into a genre in their own right, independent from the fandoms they originated in.[1] Accordingly, Omegaverse fiction is increasingy being published as original commercial erotic fiction rather than for free as fan fiction. From January to June 2020, about 200 Omegaverse books were published on Amazon.com. This has given rise to legal disputes about the copyright in plot points and tropes that are common to the genre.[1]
