Oliver Cromwell's House

Oliver Cromwell's House is based in Ely, Cambridgeshire, England and was the family home of Oliver Cromwell. The kitchen dates from around 1215, other parts being built later. In 1988, it was bought by the local council, and has been refurbished to show how it may have looked during Cromwell's lifetime.[1]

The former Lord Protector's family home is the only residence still in existence other than Hampton Court. Following a recent refurbishment the House now boasts a completely re-vamped Civil War Exhibition with impressive interactive displays and interpretations. There is also a new timeline and family tree to provide more engaging content about this complex man who killed a King, but refused the crown. Visitors have the opportunity to try on costumes and try out the games of the time as well as truly experience what life was like on the battle fields during the English Civil War in our new mini encampment.

Audio handsets bring the story of this impressive House vividly to life. Or try the new augmented reality trail - The Cromwell Quest, perfect for families. Search the rooms of this historic building looking for seven lost coins from the English Civil War. You will need to find them all and make the link to solve the riddle of where the rest of the treasure is located. Great family fun for adults and children.

The House also doubles as the Tourist Information Centre and has a delightful Gift Shop full of gift ideas as well as souvenirs relating to Cromwell and the area.

The house is also now home to an Escape Room. Whilst there are now several Escape Rooms about, Oliver Cromwell's House offers something that no other Escape Room experience can - the location and the atmosphere. Launched in September 2016 the games have been designed around the heritage of the building and the connection with Oliver Cromwell.

Opening Times Summer Hours: 1 April to 31 October - 10am to 5pm daily including Bank Holidays. Winter Hours: 1 November to 31 March - 11am to 4pm daily. Closed Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day. Last admission to the House is one hour before closing. Please note that on occasions, due to large group visits, there may be delays to public admissions and in exceptional circumstances Oliver Cromwell's House may be closed.
