Nurduran Duman

Nurduran Duman (born 23 October 1974, in Çan-Çanakkale) is a Turkish poet, writer, translator, editor, culture & art journalist.

Nurduran Duman is a Turkish poet born in Çanakkale and currently living in Istanbul. She wrote her first poem when she was 8 years old. When she was 9, she promised herself that in the future she would be a writer. She liked poetry, so she became a poet. Pursuing her passion for the sea, she attended Istanbul Technical University receiving her degree as an Ocean Engineer and a Naval Architect.

Life

Nurduran Duman's collection of poetry Yenilgi Oyunu (The Defeat Game) was awarded the 2005 Cemal Süreya Poetry Award. In 2010 she published a book of narrative prose, İstanbul'la Bakışmak, Salacak (Exchanging Glances With Istanbul, Salacak). Her second collection of poetry Mi Bemol (Mi Bemol) was published in 2012.

Duman also actively translates literature into Turkish. She translated Alma Alexander’s book The Secret of Jin-shei, published in Turkey in 2007. Her poems, translations (poems and stories), poetic articles, book reviews and interviews with foreign writers (e.g. Eileen Gunn, Karen Joy Fowler, Yiyun Li, Anna Tambour, Monica Arac de Nyeko, etc.) have been published in numerous magazines and newspapers. She has also translated the poems of Anne Sexton, Sara Teasdale, Edna St. Vincent Millay, and Slyvia Plath.

Duman was elected as a board member of Writers Syndicate of Turkey and is an active member of Turkish PEN. She presented the literature programme ‘Yazın Küresi – Sphere of Literature’ and the children literature programme ‘Kitap Hazinesi – Treasure of the Book’ for radio and television. She has also been involved in many theatre activities as an actress, director throughout her career.

Her poems have been translated into and published in English, Finnish, Serbian, Bulgarian, Romanian, Slovak, French, and German. Semi Circle, a chapbook of translations of the poet was published by Goodmorning Menagerie in USA in January 2016. Individual translations of poems have been published in Gallerie (India), Colorado Review, Interim, Faultline, Eleven Eleven, Asymptote, and other international journals. Recently, Duman was featured in the American art-literature magazine BRN with an interview conducted by Victor Hernandez Cruz, poet and Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets. Her article about the relationship between world peace and literary translation “Translation of Literature Means Peace” was originally written in English and appeared in the Finnish magazine Kaltio, translated into Finnish by Paavo J. Heinonen. Her book of Selected Poems for Versopolis was published in three languages (Macedonian-English-Turkish) in 2017 in Macedonia. Her poem “The River” was published in Modern Poetry in Translation (MPT) in 2017 in the UK. She featured in the #internationalwomensday2018 (#IWD18) MPT list of ten women poets in translation from all over the World. Duman actively participates in a wide range of international literary events. She joined the Edinburgh International Book Festival as an invited editor in August 2014 and in August 2015. She was the curator of foreign poets for the 18. İskele-KİBATEK International Poetry Festival. She was invited as a featured participant for the UNESCO European Literature Night held in Edinburgh on May 13 and for the EUNIC European Poetry Night held in London on May 14. She was awarded the 2016 Cultural Exchange Fellowship Program by The Turkish Cultural Foundation. She presented her work at the Sète International Poetry Festival in France in July 2016. She was invited as a featured participant for the Poetica 3 held in Cologne, Germany in January 2017; the international poetry festival in Genoa, Italy in June 2017; and Struga Poetry Evenings in Macedonia in August 2017. She is a poet included in the European poetry platform, Versopolis. Most recently, she was invited to the 1st session of the International Writing program at the Lu Xun Academy of Literature (Nov 10-Dec 8) in Beijing, China. She is one of the international jury members of the Mini Poetry Contest in China. She’s also one of the invited poets of the XV International Poetry Festival of Granada, Nicaragua (2019) and 13th International Poetry Festival in Pereira, Colombia (2019). She was a member in “Turkey Group of World Poetry Movement” that curated activities for “Poetry For a World Without Walls” in February, 2019.

She is giving "Sociological Anslysis in Turkish Literature" lesson in Bahcesehir University. And she currently works as the workshop coordinator of DAM www.damdayiz.com .
