The first match of derby was played between Shillong Lajong of Meghalaya and United Sikkim of Sikkim in Paljor Stadium, Gangtok on December, 2012 which ended in draw. United Sikkim got relegated at the end of the season while Lajong got relegated during 2018-19 season. Next two years saw the promotion relegation of Meghalayan teams Royal Wahingdoh (2014-15) and Rangdajied United (2013-14). Aizawl from Mizoram got promoted in 2015-16 season but again got relegated at the end. But they were promoted in the next season (2016-17) due to some reasons and became the champions. 2017-18 season saw the promotion of third northeastern team NEROCA from Manipur.

With the starting of Super Cup from 2018, there is a possibility that the I-League teams will play against other northeastern Indian Super League club NorthEast United from Assam in future.
