Nicola Coughlan

Nicola Mary Coughlan (born 9 January 1987) is an Irish actress. She is best known for her role as Clare Devlin in Derry Girls, a Channel 4 sitcom.[1]

Early life

Coughlan was born in Galway, Ireland.[2] She trained at both The Oxford School of Drama and Birmingham School of Acting. She holds a degree in English and Classical Civilisation from the National University of Ireland, Galway.[3] She lives in London.

Career

In 2018, Coughlan began playing Clare Devlin in Derry Girls. In the same year she also played Hannah Dalton in Harlots. 2018 also marked her West End debut in The Donmar Warehouse's production of The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie. Evening Standard named Nicola as "one of the Rising Stars of 2018".[4] In 2019 it was announced that Nicola had been cast in Shondaland series Bridgerton,[5] which will debut on Netflix in 2020, marking Shonda Rhimes' first production with the online streamer.[6]

Political views

In December 2019, Coughlan endorsed the Labour Party in the 2019 general election. She tweeted her support for Labour in the run up to the election and encouraged people to register to vote. She described the Conservative press office changing its Twitter name to factcheckUK during an election debate as "so sinister".[7]
