Nepal Pride Parade

Nepal Pride Parade or Nepal Queer/PoMSOGIESEC Pride Parade is organized by Queer Youth Group and Queer Rights Collective in Kathmandu on every second saturday of June. The Pride Parade became the first ever pride parade to be observed on the pride month. Nepal observes a number of LGBT marches, however this was the first pride parade. The first parade drew around four hundred people on the busy streets of Maitighar Mandala. [1] #NepalPrideParade and #NPP(the year) are the official hashtags used in social media to make posts about the event.

People gathered at Maitighar in the morning and marched towards New Baneshwar. Around 400 people showed up. [2] [3] People held Rainbow Pride Flag, Bisexual pride Flag, Transgender Pride Flag, Genderqueer Pride Flag, Genderfluid Pride Flag, Intersex Pride Flag along with slogans in four different languages. [4] [5] [6] The theme of the pride march was ‘Inclusion of queer (gender and sexual minorities) at all levels of state and decision-making process.[7] [8]

2020

Due to COVID-19 pandemic the second annual Nepal Pride Parade was conducted online. The day started with Tweetathon & Instathon that led to virtual sessions being conducted.[9][10][11]

Characteristic features

The Pride Parade did not use the abbreviation 'LGBT' and rather used 'Queer/MOGAI'. Large banners written in English and Nepali were carried which had more than 25 terms of gender and sexual identities. Intersectionality was kept at its core and there were signs raising voices for queer people who are dalits, ethnic minorities, indigenous, Madhesis, people with disabilities, etc. [12] [13] [14] [15]
