Miles Teller

Miles Alexander Teller (born February 20, 1987)[2] is an American actor. His films include The Spectacular Now, Whiplash, The Divergent Series, Bleed for This and Thank You for Your Service.[3]

Early life

Teller was born in Downingtown, Pennsylvania.[4] His mother, Merry, is a real estate agent, and his father, Michael, is a nuclear power plant engineer.[5][6] He has two older sisters, Erin and Dana.[5][7] His paternal grandfather was of Russian Jewish descent,[8] and his ancestry also includes English and Irish.[9][10] The family moved to Citrus County, Florida, when Teller was twelve.[4] He lived in Pennsylvania and Delaware.[11] At Lecanto High School,[5] he played the alto saxophone in a rock band, was a drummer for a church-youth group band, and was president of the drama club.[12][13] He also played piano and guitar, and was on the baseball team, hoping to turn professional.[14][15] Teller worked as a server at a restaurant called Crackers.[16] He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at New York University Tisch School of the Arts, and studied method acting at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute.[17][18]

In 2007, Teller was a passenger in a car that lost control at 80 mph and flipped eight times. He was ejected through a window. He has multiple visible scars on his face from the accident.[19]

Career

Teller appeared in many short films. After graduating from Tisch School of the Arts in 2009,[17] he made his film debut Rabbit Hole, after Nicole Kidman handpicked him for the role.[20] Teller starred in the stage musical Footloose in high school.[20] He later starred in the 2011 remake film of the same name.[21]

He starred in 21 & Over,[22] and The Spectacular Now opposite Shailene Woodley.[23] In Damien Chazelle's second film Whiplash, Teller played a drummer who tries to impress his abusive jazz teacher (J. K. Simmons). The film was released in 2014.[24] He was nominated for the Gotham Independent Film Award for Best Actor, the Satellite Award for Best Actor – Motion Picture and the BAFTA Rising Star Award.[25]

Teller received further recognition, after playing Peter Hayes in the commercially successful Divergent (2014), followed by the film's sequels Insurgent (2015) and Allegiant (2016).[26] He played Reed Richards / Mister Fantastic in the reboot film Fantastic Four.[27][28] Teller played arms dealer David Packouz in War Dogs,[29] and Vinny Paz in the biopic boxer film Bleed for This (2016).[30] In 2017, he starred in drama films based on true stories, including Only the Brave and Thank You for Your Service.

Personal life

Teller is a fan of the Philadelphia Phillies, Philadelphia Flyers and Philadelphia Eagles.[31] Since 2013, he has been in a relationship with model Keleigh Sperry.[32][33] They were engaged at the Molori Safari lodge and the Madikwe Game Reserve on August 20, 2017.[34][35] Teller and Sperry got married on September 1, 2019 in Maui, Hawaii.[36] In 2019, Teller became a co-owner of the award-winning[37] Finnish Long Drink.[38]
