From 2006 to 2018, Mercedes-Benz introduced two generations of CLS63, as well as one facelift for each generation. A shooting-brake model was also introduced in 2012. Mercedes-Benz replaced CLS63 AMG with CLS53 AMG in 2019.[3][4]

Background

Mercedes-Benz CLS63 AMG was first introduced in 2006 as a successor to Mercedes-Benz CLS55 AMG, as CLS55 wasn't powerful enough for a 2006 car.[2][5] CLS63's first generation design was derived from Mercedes-Benz Vision CLS, a concept car later resulted in the development of Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class W219.[6][7]

The first generation CLS63 was launched in 2006, as a four-door coupé with advanced Mercedes-AMG technologies, such as AMG high-performance brake system and 7G-Tronic transmission. The 7G-Tronic transmission allows the driver to control the car in either an automatic or a manual way.[1] CLS63 had a 6,208 cubic centimetres (6.208 l) 514 horsepower (383 kW) V8 petrol engine, with 630 newton metres (460 lb⋅ft) of torque and a top speed of 250 kilometres per hour (160 mph).[note 1] The first generation of CLS63 was able to reach 100 kilometres per hour (62 mph) in 4.5 seconds.[10] Its curb weight was 1,870 kilograms (4,120 lb). The CLS63 had a double overhead camshaft and a fuel injection system.[11][12]

The 7G-Tronic transmission allows the driver to change the driving mode between "S" (Sport), "C" (Comfort) and "M" (Manual) modes. Sport mode is almost 30% faster than comfort and 50% faster than manual. To change the driving mode, the driver should press a button placed inside the car.[13]

A new suspension system developed by Mercedes-AMG was used in CLS63, caused an increase in the car's handling. The front axle had a 35 millimetres wider track, which decreased the dynamic wheel loads when cornering. This also caused the wheel arches to be wider.[13] The CLS63 was equipped with 18 inches (46 cm) alloy wheels,[14] with the option of receiving 19 inches (48 cm) alloy wheels.[15]

PRE-SAFE, a collision avoidance system, was included in the first generation of CLS63 as a standard equipment. By using this system, the car could recognize a potential accident in its early stages and take precautionary measures.[1][16]

Notes

  1. Mercedes-Benz and several other German automobile manufacturers have digitally limited top speed of their cars to 250 kilometres per hour (160 mph).[8][9]
