Matthew Alford

Matthew Alford is a British writer and documentary producer.

Early Life

Alford grew up in Devon, England. He studied a PhD at the University of Bath.

Career

Writing

Alford has written articles for The Guardian,[1] New Statesman,[2] and Independent,[3] as well as clickbait and alternative media.[4][5][6][7]

His first book Reel Power: Hollywood Cinema and American Supremacy is based on his 2008 PhD thesis, which had applied Edward S. Herman and Noam Chomsky's propaganda model to the film industry.[8][9]

He has appeared as a frequent guest on media networks including CBC[10], Al Jazeera[11] and RT.[12][13]

In 2019, he worked on an article that highlighted omissions from mainstream news coverage of Western foreign policy but it was dropped by the commissioning publication on the morning it was due to emerge.[14][15][16]

Producing

In 2014, Alford produced a documentary that followed his research into the 1997 disappearance of Hollywood screenwriter Gary Devore.[17][18]

In September 2020, the Media Education Foundation is scheduled to distribute Theatres of Command, a documentary co-produced by Alford and based on a 2017 book National Security Cinema he co-authored about the role of the US military and CIA in re-writing film and TV.[19][20]

Alford played himself as a "mediocre stand-up comedian" in a short docudrama, Eagle Kill, released on 14 February 2020 by Three Graces Films.[21]
