Manhasset Secondary School
Manhasset Secondary School is a six-year public high school and middle school located in Manhasset, Nassau County, New York, United States on the North Shore of Long Island. The school district is called Manhasset Union Free School District (MUFSD), despite the district not being union-free. Manhasset High School consistently ranks among the top 100 high schools in America. In addition, the school has been represented yearly national science competitions such as I-SWEEEP, ISEF, and WAC Foundation Lighting Science Fair. Manhasset teachers are some of the most highly paid in the country, with a median annual salary of $116,556.[2]

As of the 2014–15 school year, the school had an enrollment of 1,092 students and 83.0 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student–teacher ratio of 13.2:1. There were 44 students (4.0% of enrollment) eligible for free lunch and 8 (0.7% of students) eligible for reduced-cost lunch.[1]
Building history
The secondary school building was built in 1934–1939 as a project of the Works Progress Administration. The building was designed by the firm Tooker & Marsh[3] with Roger H. Bullard (of Manhasset) as an associate architect. John H. Esile & Co. was contracted as the building contractor. It has undergone multiple extensions and renovations throughout the years, but remains almost entirely intact historically. The interior main hallway and auditorium underwent restoration in 2009. It is currently pending a listing on the National Register of Historic Places.

Sports
- Manhasset's team nicknames are the Indians and "Set," but the school is progressively trying to stray from the Indian name due to social tensions. The school colors are orange and blue.
- Varsity sports at Manhasset High School include baseball, football, basketball, cheerleading, field hockey, cross country, track, volleyball, lacrosse,[4] tennis, soccer, swimming, crew, fencing, badminton, golf, bowling and wrestling.
Lacrosse
- In 1932, Manhasset established the first HS lacrosse team on Long Island while Garden City followed shortly after in 1934.[5] A yearly lacrosse tradition known as the "Woodstick Classic" emerged between the schools, an event which is attended by thousands every year, and is currently the nation's longest continuous boys lacrosse rivalry.[6]
- Since 1995, Manhasset has won the Class B State Championship one time : 1995[4]
- In 2009 and 2010, the boys lacrosse team won the Class C state championship, making back-to-back state titles for the first time in school history.[7]
- In 2003, 2014 and 2018, the girls lacrosse team won the Class B state championship. [8]
Rowing
- In 2008, the Boys Junior 4+ boat won the Scholastic National Regatta in Oak Ridge, Tennessee,[9] the prestigious Stotesbury Cup regatta, and the New York State Championship regatta.
- The following year, in 2009, the Boys Senior 4+ won back-to-back National titles.[10][11] They also placed first in both the New York State Championship regatta and the New Jersey State Championship regatta that year. The Girls Junior 4+ boat also won the Scholastic National Regatta and placed 4th in the world-famous Head of the Charles Regatta.
- In 2010 the Girls Lightweight 4+ boat won New York State Championship regatta and the Scholastic National Regatta. They also took second place at the Stotesbury Cup Regatta.
- In 2017 the Girls Lightweight 8+ boat won New York State Championship regatta and took third at the Scholastic National Regatta. They also placed 2nd in B finals at the Youth National Regatta.
Music
Eight choirs involve over 300 students in singing: Symphonic Choir, Concert Choir I, Men's Chorus, Women's Chorus, Vocal Jazz Ensemble, Select Ensemble (elite mixed chorus), Kinsmen (elite men's chorus), The Shirley Tempos (Women's a cappella), Long Island Sounds (Men's a cappella). Manhasset also features music from Orchestra, Band, and Jazz Ensemble. .

- Dr. Nancy E. Gary, (1937–2006) former dean of Albany Medical College, Executive Vice President of the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences and dean of its F. Edward Hébert School of Medicine.[15]
- Dan Gurney (1931-2018), race car driver, auto designer.
- Ken Howard (1944–2016), actor best known for the TV series The White Shadow[16] and Chancellor of the National Kidney Foundation.
- Steve Lesser (born 1944), architect, best known for work on Faneuil Hall, Boston.
- Barbara Prey (born Barbara Ernst in 1957), painter with works in numerous museums and the White House.
- Ira Lee Sorkin (born 1943), attorney and SEC expert, defended Bernard Madoff.
