Maha Al-Saati

Maha Al-Saati is a Saudi filmmaker[2][3] and university professor[4][5] who has taught both in Vancouver, Canada and Saudi Arabia[6][7]. Her style is experimental and is inspired by MTV music videos.[8]

Name: Maha Al-Saati Occupation: University Professor, Filmmaker Alma mater: Simon Fraser University[1]

Her film, "Fear: Audibly" is about a girl's fear of the trumpet of doom which will end the world. The film reflects the religious period in Saudi Arabia of the 1980s and 1990s. She cites her dependence on sound in the film as influenced by the Islamic restriction on visuals, in addition to the emphasis on stories about judgment day that have been common in Saudi schools as she was growing up. She cites the dependency of preachers on cassette tapes to give rise to sound dependent stories. She cites Slavoj Zizek's description of sound as a floating disembodied entity that travels unnaturally like a ghost, which affected her treatment of sound in the film.[9][10]

Her film "Hair: The Story of Grass" is about the beauty standards regarding body hair in the Arab World, it critiques the treatment of the mentally ill, gender roles and the culture of consumerism[11]. Her feature film "A Trip to Disney" is about a woman who travels from Saudi to Disney World, Florida only to find out she is abandoned by her prince[12].
