History

The original Central High School was built in 1938 and was one of several small high schools in Madison County. Additions were made to the school beginning in 1953 and Madison Central (consolidated) High School was opened in the fall of 1954. Central was a consolidation of four Madison County system high schools (Central, Kingston, Waco and Kirksville). It was the lone high school in the county system until Madison Southern High School was opened in the fall of 1988. In 1989, Richmond's city high school (Madison) was dissolved and its students were moved to Central. Madison Central currently serves the citizens of Richmond and the northern sector of Madison County.

In 2003, the school underwent a major renovation project, which included a new cafeteria. In 2005-2006, an auditorium was built on the school campus, as well as remodeling the hallway section that leads to it and the health building gymnasium, and new sets of classrooms and a lecture hall under the auditorium.

Sports

The school's mascot is the Indians.

Football

The Madison Central Indians football team won a district championship in the 2011-2012 season. The team plays at the 6A level.The team won the regional in 2018

Baseball

The school baseball team won the 1982 Kentucky High School State Baseball Championship by going 40-0. That team was coached by Don Richardson, whom the field was named after in 2008.

Basketball

The basketball team won the State Championship in 2013 and the 11th region in 1987, 1999, 2006 and 2013. The 1999 squad was the only Madison Central team to win the Kentucky State AAU Championship.

Dance team

The Madison Central Dance team, has won many national and state titles. In 2009 the Madison Central Dance Team JV placed 8th at the UDA National High School Dance Team Championship. In 2013 the Varsity team won five national titles at the Ameri-Dance nationals in Indianapolis Indiana. The won first in pom, lyrical, jazz, and kick, and third in hip hop. The JV team won two national titles, first in pom and in jazz. In 2016 the team won a national title at Eastern National Dance Competetition in Myrtle Beach. Placing 1st in lyrical, 2nd in hip hop, and 3rd in Pom and jazz.

Cheerleading

The cheerleaders won the KHSAA State Championship in 2002, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010,2013, 2017, 2018, and 2019. The junior varsity squad has won the UCA National High School Cheerleading Championship 7 times, and the varsity squad frequently places in the top five of the Small Varsity division, with a third-place finish in 2010. They were featured in American Cheerleader Magazine in 2007. they also have various regional titles. They practice 6 days a week 11 months out of the year.

Marching band

The marching band won the Kentucky Music Educators Association (KMEA) State Championship in 1989 (Class 2A), 2004 (Class 3A), 2014, 2015, and 2016 (Class 5A). Their 2014 KMEA 5A State Championship win marked the first time since 1990 a band from outside Lexington (Fayette County) won the top honors in the largest class. (Through 2004, bands were classified according to the number of members in the band, and 4A bands were the largest of these. In 2005, KMEA began classifying bands according to the size of the school, necessitating the addition of a 5A class.) Madison Central has made KMEA history by being the first school to win three consecutive championships in the 5A class.

The band has competed in the KMEA State Finals (involving the top four semifinalists in each of the five classes) a total of 17 times including Class AA: 1988, 1989, 1990, 1996, 1997, 1999, 2000, 2003, Class AAA: 2001, 2004 Class AAAAA: 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2016.

In 2019, The Madison Central High School Marching Band will march to the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City.[2]

Track

The girls' track team has won 7 consecutive regional titles from 2010-present (2016). The boys were region champions in 2012, 2014-2015. The boys team has finished either first or second in region each of the past 7 years.

Archery

The MCHS archery team placed first in the region with the highest team score in the nation, fifth in state and ninth in nationals in 2013. The team qualified for 2013 nationals. They also Placed 1st in the world in 2014 and 2016!

Mock trial

The Madison Central/KY Tech Mock Trial team won the Kentucky Mock Trial State Championship in 2001, 2009 and 2010. The team has also placed in the top 25 of all three National Tournaments they attended.
