Lycoming County Sheriff's Office

The Lycoming County Sheriff's Office (LCSO) is a criminal justice agency based in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

The Lycoming County Sheriff's Office is one the main law enforcement agency within Lycoming County, Pennsylvania. The law enforcement agency is responsible for 1,244 square miles (3,220 km) and a population of just over 116,000 as of 2015.

The Sheriff's Office maintains a fleet of 2015 or 2016 Ford Explorers as the lone model in the departments fleet. They joint workforce with Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) and Williamsport Police Department (WPD) along with numerous other local police agencies.[1]

History

The first Lycoming County Sheriff assumed duty in 1795 and was the county's only police officer. By 1810 seven deputies worked under the sheriff. The Sheriff's work lessened after the formation of the Williamsport Police Department and the founding of Pennsylvania State Police Troop F barracks in nearby Montoursville, Pennsylvania. The agency officially had its name changed from Lycoming County Sheriff to the Lycoming County Sheriff's Office in 1922.

2016 lawsuit

In 2016, former deputy Sheriff Kathie Sheets settled a lawsuit with the Sheriff's Office for $15,000. Sheets says she was fired because she used the restroom too often. And upon her firing she filed a civil rights suit against the agency. However Sheriff Mark Lusk states that it was Sheets sleeping on the job and overall non-motivation as the main reasons for her firing.[2]

Agency purpose and use

As normal in Pennsylvania the Lycoming County Sheriff's Office primary duty is to operate the Lycoming County Prison, provide security at the county's courthouse, transport fugitives, as well as carry out search warrants. This however doesn't mean the Sheriff's office doesn't support other local agencies or perform traffic stops. The sheriff's office can regularly be seen making traffic stops due to laws being violated in their presence and backing up fellow agencies operating in the county.

The sheriff's office also issues license to carry and concealed carry permits in the county.

The LCSO operates a fleet of dozens of vehicles, these include numerous marked and unmarked Ford Police Interceptor Utilitys. A handful of unmarked Ford Police Interceptor Sedans and well as two Ford Transit Prisoner Transporters. The agency also has one older marked Ford Expedition commonly used as a Department car.
