Academic career

After completing a MA(Hons) at the University of Auckland, and a 1985 DPhil thesis from the University of Oxford titled The problem of tuberculosis in England and Wales, 1900-1950, Bryder returned to Auckland, where she continued her research into the social history of medicine.[1][2][3]

Bryder's highest profile work has been in relation to the Cartwright Inquiry into the 'unfortunate experiment.' Her 2013 book A History of the 'Unfortunate Experiment' at National Women's Hospital did not support one of the inquiry's central findings (that there had been a prospective study) and attracted a great deal of attention in academia,[4][5][6][7][8] popular press[9][10][11] and wider public.[12][13][14] She has also written about the history of National Women's Hospital[15] and the Plunket Society.

In 2009, Bryder was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand.[3]
