Lella Kmar

Lella Kmar (Arabic: للاّ قمر) was an Ottoman odalisque and later the wife of three successive beys. Born in 1862 and died on December 31, 1942 in Tunis, she was buried in Tourbet Al Haydar in the Jellaz Cemetery.[1]

Biography

Lella Kmar had a big influence in the Husainid dynasty as she married three beys: Muhammad III as-Sadiq, then Ali III ibn al-Husayn and then Muhammad V an-Nasir, who built the Essaada Palace for her during World War I.[1][2]

Lella Kmar did not have children, however she raised Chedli Haydar, the child of another odalisque. Haydar, the last Sheikh of the Medina under the Husainid dynasty, inherited and occupied the Essaada Palace until 1953, when he gave it to the Tunisian State.[2]
