Blair's heavily crosshatched drawings and dark storytelling are influenced by Edward Gorey[11][12] and The New York Times referred to his work on The Hunting Accident as being drawn with "a graphomaniacal fervor".[13]

His illustrations have appeared in print and online magazines[14] and have been used for commercial art such as t-shirt and tote bag designs.[15]

In 2018, he and David Carlson won Best in Adult Books for The Hunting Accident at the inaugural Excellence in Graphic Literature awards,[16] and in 2012 Blair was the Grand Prize winner of The New Yorker's Eustace Tilley contest.[15]
