Kupe Dance is a song by Ghanaian-United Kingdom based recording artist A-Star. Kupe was aired on BBC Radio 1Xtra,[1] on The Smoothie Shy Show in November 2018 and was nominated[2] for Viewer's Choice at the 3rd edition of TheMVPs Award[3]. It was released independently under Say Less[4] and was produced by E.Double.B, ChrisKillThatBeat, Bobbi Zion, and Moris Beat.

Overview

The dance challenge was created by the Ghanaian dance instructor Zigi and it was made public via Instagram after some group of French guys;[5] Teddy Ovo, Habitu Etoi, Jim Seuh and Yoyo went viral with the challenge and are well known as Kupe Boys. According to BBC, the madness #KupeChallenge has seized netizens[6] of the continent from Dakar to Johannesburg, via Douala to Lagos, the challenge makes the African dance. In October 2018, it was reported that the Ghanaian actress Juliet Ibrahim[7] and her sisters also joined the ongoing Kupe Dance challenge.

In 2019, Zigi spoke to BBC News Pidgin about Janet Jackson[8] being involved in the Kupe Challenge and according to Zigi, "Kupe" is a popular saying on the streets of Ghana which means[9] "warn" or "threaten someone". Zigi came up with the Kupe dance step by "clapping to alert or get someone’s attention and then show the peace sign to promote peace in society" he tell's Chiagoziem Onyekwena of Guardian Arts. Late 2019, Kupe Dance was featured on NBA 2K20[10], a basketball simulation video game developed by Visual Concepts.

Music video

The music video for "Kupe Dance" was released on 12 August 2018 and directed by Kunai Lester[11]. After the song went viral in September 2018, the video gained over 600,000[12] views on YouTube, between September and October 2018. Currently the YouTube views has grown to 15 million, after Beyoncé joined the kupe dance challenge [13] on stage at 2018 Global Citizen Festival in South Africa.
