Khar Danda

Khar Danda lies on the west coast of Mumbai and North-Western side of Bandra Carter Road. It is also an eponym to Khar Road.[1]

A fishing village located on the western side of Bandra & Khar Road. The original inhabitants of Mumbai are living here from centuries. The Western freeway and the coastal road projects of Mumbai have also proposed to have bridges and passes through this village. This village is divided into many small towns or gaothans, such as Dandpada, Madhalapada, Vetalpada, Kotpada, Patilpada, Varin Pada and many more. Also each of these padas have each one specific gods and goddess for example Harbamauli, Ram mandir, Havloo Baba, Angur baba, Chere dev, Shree Dandeshwar mandir, Maruaai devi & Vetal Dev.

The village includes two fisherman jetty.

Holi

Khar Danda is also famous for an old tradition and festival named Varin Pada Haoli (Holi), This is the first Hindu festival granted by the British India government. The story begins when in a year the people of this village started gathering wood for Holi fire. Due to lack of money and lack of trees available in the area, the people started stealing from the neighbouring village, however it's believed that holi goddess was impressed by the worship and faith appeared to a fishermen and stopped them from doing so, she commanded that the whole village to celebrate holi 2 days before the actual day so that there was sufficient woods to all the villages . When the British officer Carter heard this, he was surprised and decided that to implement it in that village forever, Until then to now every here holi is burnt 2 days ago the actual date. Maharashtra Police & Marathi TV Host cum actor Aadesh Bandekar are frequent pilgrims every year.

Controversy

In August 2017, BMC declared Khar Danda Village as a heritage site and also removed the tag slums as this area is currently well developed.
