Kataka (film)

Kataka (transl.Crab or Cancer zodiac sign) is a 2017 Indian Kannada horror suspense thriller film written and directed by Ravi Basrur,[2] marking his Kannada-language debut. Kataka has been dubbed into 15 languages, and it is the first Kannada film dubbed into English.[3] The film is based on various true incidents in the coastal region of Karnataka.[4]

Plot

Kumar, tired of the hustle and bustle of city life, returns to his native village along with his wife Vandhana and four-year-old daughter Kavya. With the help of his uncle and a childhood friend, he plans to start a school in the village. However, an ancient black magic curse is placed on his family after his daughter unwittingly touches an enchanted item.[4]

Release

The film was released on 13 October, 2017 in 13 languages, including Kannada, English, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Tulu,Kodava, Hindi, Punjabi, Beary, Assamese, Konkani, and Marathi.[5][6]

Reception

The film had a limited release and received positive reviews from critics and audiences. Shlagha Saligrama's notable performance was praised along with the direction of Ravi Basrur.[7]

Awards

Shlagha Saligrama won the 2017 Karnataka State Film Award for Best Child Actor (Female) and the SIIMA Special Award for Best Child Artist.[8][9] Ravi Basrur was nominated for the SIIMA Award for Best Director in the Kannada category,[10][11] but lost to Tharun Sudhir for his work in chowka.[12]

Sequel

Ravi Basrur has announced plans to make a sequel with the new actors and most of his original technical team, but the plot will not be a direct continuation of the first film.[13]
