Karnataka Common Entrance Test

Karnataka Common Entrance Test (KCET) is the common entrance exam conduced annually for admission to the professional courses in the state of Karnataka. KCET is conducted by the Karnataka Examination Authority (KEA), which comes under the Ministry of Higher Education of Karnataka. It is an offline exam conducted for admission to the full-time Engineering, Technology, B-Pharma, D-Pharma, Agriculture courses (Farm Science) and Veterinary courses, in the various educational institutions in the state of Karnataka. The Government of Karnataka established Common Entrance Test Cell in the year 1994 for conducting of entrance test and determining the eligibility/merit, for admission to the first year or first semester of full time professional courses for Government share of seats in various professional courses. KCET is conducted throughout Karnataka in almost all the district cities in the month of April – May (usually in the last week of April).[1]

KCET is conducted offline. The exam involves 4 subjects – Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology. According to KCET Exam Pattern, the question paper carries a total of 180 MCQ questions to be attempted in 3 hours. Each paper/subject will be conducted for 60 marks each with a duration of 80 minutes. The total marks is 180. KCET Syllabus is based on 1st and 2nd year PUC syllabus prescribed by Department of Pre-University Education of Karnataka State. There will be no negative marking in the exam. The exam is conducted in two languages i.e. English and Kannada languages.

Kannada language test is conducted for the students of the states other than Karnataka and the Kannadiga students living outside the state.[2]

Various professional courses are offered through KCET. Before the NEET exam was nationalised in India for medical (MBBS, BDS, BAMS ,etc.) entrance exam, KCET also offered the medical seats in Karnataka.[3]
