Early life

Kaia Jordan Gerber[2][3][4] was born on September 3, 2001.[5][6] Gerber is the daughter of model-turned-businessman Rande Gerber and supermodel Cindy Crawford. Her father is Jewish;[7] her mother, who is of German, English, French, and Danish descent, is Christian.[8][9] Her older brother is model Presley Gerber. When she was 10, Gerber landed her first modeling gig with Versace's junior line, Young Versace. She made her acting debut at 15 in Sister Cities (2016). Gerber took online classes at Malibu High School.[10]

Career

Modeling

Gerber has modeled for magazines such as Vogue,[11] Teen Vogue and Pop Magazine.[12] In 2017, she made her runway debut for Raf Simons's Calvin Klein Collection, then walked for fashion houses such as Marc Jacobs, Burberry, Alexander Wang, Coach, Prada, Chanel, Fendi, Moschino, Saint Laurent, Alexander McQueen, and Versace, alongside her mother, during 2018 Spring Fashion Week. She landed her first soloVogue cover on the February 2018 issue of Vogue Paris. Gerber appeared in Spring 2018 campaigns for Versace, Calvin Klein, Marc Jacobs, and Omega. In 2018, she and Sofia Mechetner led the campaign for Marc Jacobs's fragrance Daisy.[13] in the same year, she was the star of the CHANEL handbags campaign and Valentino at the same time.

In 2018 Gerber collaborated with Karl Lagerfeld to create the KarlxKaia collection, her first collection.[14]

Music videos

In July 2019, Gerber starred in the video for John Eatherly's song "Burnout". This was her first music video appearance.[15][16][17]

Awards and honors

Gerber was awarded Model of the Year at The Fashion Awards in 2018.[18]

Personal life

Religion

Gerber has said she observes some Jewish holidays such as Passover and Yom Kippur. Her family has a Passover seder each year, and her mother, Cindy Crawford has said they do not observe Chanukah[19], but she prepares a brisket from a recipe given to her by Gerber's paternal grandmother and which she calls a shiksa brisket.[20] She also celebrates Chrismukkah, which draws from traditions of Christmas and Hanukkah. In a 2018 interview, when asked about her relationship with Judaism (as her father is Jewish), and her level of religious observance or lack thereof, she said "Yeah, my dad is Jewish and my mom is Christian so we grew up doing both; we call it Christmas Chrismukah. I love learning about both of those sides of my life. We’d do Passover, Passover dinner and Yom Kippur. I love learning all of that, and learning the cooking".[21]
