Biography

Bowker was born in Shawford, Hampshire, England. Her family moved to the British colony of Northern Rhodesia when Bowker was two, and lived there for eight years. She had many interests, including painting and horseback riding.[1] But she was most interested in acting, and she began to pursue her acting career after her family returned to England. She first attracted international attention as the star of The Adventures of Black Beauty, a 1972 TV series which was a "continuation" of the book. In an interview, Bowker stated that her experience in horseback riding was likely key in earning her the role. She also recalled how some of the Black Beauty episodes were set in springtime but filmed in winter, so that sometimes she had to wear summer outfits even in the cold.[2]

She also starred as St Clare of Assisi in Franco Zeffirelli's Brother Sun, Sister Moon, also from 1972. Her other well-known film appearances are as Mina Harker in the 1977 film Count Dracula, Princess Andromeda in the 1981 Ray Harryhausen film, Clash of the Titans, and as Lady Olivia Lilburn in Alan Bridges' adaptation of Isabel Colegate's novel The Shooting Party (1985).

Personal life

Bowker married Harry Meacher in 1979.[3]
