Joshua Mintz

Joshua David Mintz (born August 22, 1965 in Mexico City) is an International Emmy® award-winning producer and TV executive.

Joshua Mintz, Producer and TV Executive

With more than 30 years of experience in the television industry, Mintz has held leadership and production positions in the four most important Hispanic TV networks in the US and Mexico, having worked at Telemundo, Televisa, Univision and TV Azteca.[1][2]

Career

Mintz began his career at Televisa in various technical and production positions. He was appointed general director of Broadcasting Stations in 1990, where he was responsible for operating four national networks, two international networks and Televisa's cable system in Mexico City. He was later appointed general director of logistics of Televisa San Angel. During his tenure with Televisa, Mintz was also a member of the Executive Programming and Production Committees. Mintz was the executive producer of more than 20 entertainment/musical productions including the first three Mexican "Telethons", as well as other highly acclaimed shows such as "La Fabrica de Sueños", "Premios TV y Novelas", "Juan Gabriel at the Azteca", and "Fantastico Amor".

In 2000, Mintz joined Univision as director of drama production and led the design of their first novela studio in Miami. While at Univision, he worked directly with Univision's former chairman and CEO, Jerry Perenchio, and was executive producer of the Selena Vive! live special from Houston, TX, which became the highest-rated show in U.S. Hispanic television history at that time.[3]

In 2006, Mintz joined Azteca America as director of Programming[4] and shortly thereafter was promoted to director of Programming, Production and Operations.

In 2007, Mintz served as vice president of strategic development at Telemundo Television Studios, a division of NBCUniversal, where he attracted top international stars to the network such as Rafael Amaya, Kate del Castillo, Aracely Arambula, Victoria Ruffo, Edith Gonzalez, Marlene Favela, among many others.

In 2011 Mintz was appointed executive vice president for Telemundo Entertainment. He was responsible for the overall strategy and development of entertainment programming for Telemundo Network. He worked towards the optimization of the process development-to-air, and designed and implemented long-term strategic plans for the programming grid that included original content and the programming acquisition strategy.

He signed longtime Univision talk show host Cristina Saralegui for a new talk show on Telemundo, Pa'lante con Cristina.[5] Under Mintz, Telemundo produced La Reina del Sur, a telenovela that premiered to more viewers than any other show in Telemundo history.[6][7] The show's May 2011 season finale recorded the highest ratings in network history.[8] According to NPR, Mintz said the show deserved an Emmy Award for attracting millions of viewers.[9]

Under Mintz' supervision of content development, Telemundo delivered a record-breaking performance for five consecutive years since the 2010–2011 season,[10][11][12] becoming the fastest growing Spanish-Language Broadcast Network in the Unites States, surpassing its main competitor by 2015[13] and even positioning itself as the number one Hispanic network in the country.[14] Mintz accomplished this thanks to the over thirty novelas produced during his tenure at Telemundo, fifteen of which made it to the top of the rating charts for primetime. Amongst which are included "El Señor de los Cielos", the show that has catapulted Telemundo to becoming the US Hispanic network with the most viewers at 10pm during the broadcasting of its first five seasons;[15][16][17][18][19][20] "Señora Acero", a ratings phenomenon that became number one in ratings in its time slot,[21] and "La Patrona", the very first number one show in ratings in the history of the network in its time slot.[22][23]

Following this role, Mintz served as executive vice president of scripted programming & general manager at Telemundo Television Studios,[24] where he was responsible for all fiction and drama productions in the U.S., Mexico and Colombia, as well as any new co-productions for Telemundo Media.[25]

From 2016 through 2018, Mintz served as President of Production (fiction) of the Mexican network TV Azteca. During his tenure, Mintz lead the strategy and execution behind the network's primetime programming restructure since its new CEO, Benjamin Salinas, took office in 2015.[26][27] Under Mintz leadership, TV Azteca produced and aired the first season of "Rosario Tijeras", the series that became a game changer for Mexico's primetime content and that allowed the network to beat life-long competitor Televisa for the first time in 23 years for the number one place in ratings in its time slot.[28]

In 2019 Mintz founded Gilah Studios, his own production company, to specialize in producing high-quality series for on-demand platforms.

Awards and nominations

In 2011, the prestigious Billboard magazine included Mintz in its #LatinPowerPlayers list.[29]

In 2014, Mintz received three International Emmy® Award nominations for his telenovelas "Passion Prohibida", "La Patrona" and "El Señor de los Cielos".[30] All three productions were nominated in the same category for best Non-English Language US Primetime Program. "El Señor de los Cielos" won Mintz the first-ever Emmy® award given in this category.[31]

In 2015, the People en Español magazine includes Mintz in its list of the "50 Most Influential Latinos", a coveted recognition that he shared with world personalities including Ricky Martin, Carolina Herrera, Jennifer Lopez, Lionel Messi and Pope Francis.[32]

Joshua Mintz has been quoted in The New York Times,[33] Variety (magazine)[34][35][36][37] and NPR Morning Edition[38] among many others.

Personal

Mintz is married to retired telenovela actress Sarah Mintz. They announced in December 2013 that they were expecting twins.[39] Mintz also has two children, Daniela and Alexander, from his first marriage to fellow television executive Veronica Pimstein.
