Johnson Yeung

Johnson Yeung Ching Yin (Chinese: 楊政賢, born 29 November 1991) is a Hong Kong pro-democracy politician, social activist, former convener of the Civil Human Rights Front and Secretary-General of the Hong Kong Federation of Students. He is a lifetime member of Amnesty International, chairperson of the Hong Kong Civil Hub and a fellow of the World Movement for Democracy.[1] He also participated in the 2014 Hong Kong protests, the Occupy Movement and the Umbrella Movement, and was arrested and charged with rioting for his activities.[2][3]

Biography

He studied in Wong Shiu Chi Secondary School in his early years. He graduated from the Department of Politics and Administration of the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2014, and obtained a Master of Laws from the University of Hong Kong in 2016. He was the President of the Student Union of the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Deputy Secretary-General of the Hong Kong Federation of Students.[4]

Imprisonment during the 2019 Hong Kong protests

On July 28, 2019, he was arrested along with other 40 citizens for participating in a procession in the Central and Western District. They were taken to the Kwai Chung Police Station parking lot, and were detained for more than 20 hours. He was subsequently released on bail pending investigation of the crime of obstructing police officer in due execution of his duty.[2]

He has accused the central government for destroying Hong Kong's democracy and freedom, and that the current negotiation and communication space has disappeared. Yeung also pointed out that Hong Kong people should appeal to those around them to participate in civil disobedience.[5]
