Jindo AIDS scandal

The Jindo AIDS Scandal was a 2002 incident in Jindo County in South Jeolla Province, South Korea.[1][2][3] This sex scandal occurred in June 2020. Ms. Seomo, an AIDS patient (28 years old at the time), became aware that she contracted AIDS, but had sexual relations with someone else. Seomo, was a housewife from Haenam-gun, and worked at an adult entertainment establishment, and became infected with AIDS. She worked at an adult entertainment establishment in Jindo County, and had sexual relations with other people. However, their identities were revealed, and there were only four individuals who received a medical examination. All four hid this fact, and went to clinics in other areas, including Gwangju and Mokpo-si. Since these facts were not revealed, an AIDS scare spread.

Seomo was originally a housewife, but ran away from home. However, she went to Jindo County because of a job placement agency. The circumstances of human trafficking came to light during the investigation, where Mr. K (35 years old) received an introduction fee of ten million won, and sold Ms. Seo to a tea room, and he became wanted on suspicion of violating the Punishment of Violence Act. The investigation revealed that Ms. Seo had sexual relations with four individuals, including Mr. S (31 years old) of the same neighborhood, without using a contraceptive. In addition to this, in mid April, Ms. Seo was lured by Mr. K who said "let's go on a trip to Mokpo" and was sold by way of a Mokpo job placement agency to Wando Tea Room, and worked for three days.

After being diagnosed with AIDS, she divorced her husband, and in the process of the investigation, the fact that she ran away in the interim was also revealed. The majority of the men who had sexual relations with Seomo did not cooperate with the investigation, and instead tried to cover it up and conceal the facts. This scandal was called the Jindo AIDS scandal, as well as the 2002 Jindo sex scandal.

Overview

Cause

On June 12, 2002, Ms. Seomo (28 years old), was booked and investigated by the Jindo Police Agency on suspicion of having sexual relations with four men (violation of the Prevention of AIDS Act), while hiding the fact that she had contracted AIDS. Mr. K (35 years old) received an introduction fee of ten million won, and sold Ms. Seo to a tea room, and he became wanted on suspicion of violating the Punishment of Violence Act. Initially, it was revealed that Seomo had went to a team room to engage in prostitution, however, it became known that she had been placed there by a job placement agency. However, the exact place where Seomo contracted AIDS was not revealed.

This incident occurred back to back with the 2001 Yeosu AIDS scandal.

Seomo is originally from Haenam-gun, Jeollanam-do, and moved to Jindo County around the end of 2001. Jindo County Clinic said that Ms. Seomo moved her residence from Haenam to Jindo at the end of last year, and was managed throughout that time, however, the Clinic could not have known the fact that she had sexual relations. Police investigated and revealed the acts of the illegal job placement introduction related with the employment, and there is evidence that management of the AIDS patient was not done properly.

Fortunately, Seomi experience realized some odd symptoms, and went to the hospital for treatment in April 2001, where she was diagnosed with AIDS. Once she was confirmed as an AIDS patient in May 2001, her husband divorced her, and she went to go live with her family in her hometown, Jindo. She was designated as a target of special infection disease management, and went to get and take drugs once a month from health authorities. After getting divorced, she went to a team room in Jindo County at the introduction of a job placement agency, and tried to escape.

The investigation revealed that Ms. Seo had sexual relations with four individuals, including Mr. S (31 years old) of the same neighborhood, without using a contraceptive, from January 2002. In addition to this, in mid April, Ms. Seo was lured by Mr. K who said "let's go on a trip to Mokpo" and was sold by way of a Mokpo job placement agency to Wando Tea Room, and worked for three days. The four individuals, including Mr. S., whom had sexual relations with Ms. Seo, were examined for AIDS infection at the Jindo County Clinic, and it was revealed that the test results for all four came back negative.

Investigation

On June 12, 2002, Ms. Seomo (28 years old), was booked and investigated by the Jindo Police Agency on suspicion of having sexual relations with four men (violation of the Prevention of AIDS Act), while hiding the fact that she had contracted AIDS.

Police suspected that Ms. Seo knew that she had contracted the AIDS virus in April, but did not take preventive measures, and had sexual relations with three men on nine occasions. Victims were tracked down after seeking facts about the sexual relations with men from Seomo. However, the majority of men that were identified denied the suspicions.

Response of Health Authorities

The AIDS scare from this incident did not blow over easily. The County Clinic explained, "Ms. Seomo moved her residence from Haenam to Jindo at the end of last year, and was managed throughout that time, however, we could not verify whether she had sexual relations with men, given the fact that there were circumstances beyond our control, such as the fact she left the premises."
