Jagdish Khattar

Jagdish Khattar is the former Managing Director of Maruti Udyog Limited, where he served from 1993 to 2007. He joined Maruti in July 1993 as director (marketing), and went on to become Managing Director in 1999, first as government nominee, and then in May 2002, as Suzuki Motor Corporation (SMC) nominee. His last day in office at Maruti as MD, at age 65, was on Tuesday, December 18, 2007.[1]

Prior to this post, he has been an officer of the Indian Administrative Service with more than 37 years of experience.[2] He has overseen a restructuring of the company in face of increased competition caused by the foray of various foreign car players in the Indian market.[3] After hanging up his boots at Maruti Suzuki, he has turned an entrepreneur and decided to set up an independent multi-brand pan India sales and service network in the automobile sector. In 2008, Mr. Khattar launched his next venture - Carnation Auto, with a vision of developing a multi-brand automobile sales and service network.

CBI officials have filed an FIR in the case, where it has named Jagdish Khattar and his company Carnation Auto India Limited for allegedly causing losses of Rs 110 crore to Punjab National Bank (PNB). The investigative agency has registered an FIR under the IPC sections related to criminal conspiracy and cheating on a complaint from Punjab National Bank, the officials said. [4]

Background

He belonged to a family of entrepreneurs who had set up an electricity generation and supply company in Dera Ismail Khan (now in Pakistan) before Partition . His grand father was a member of the Legislative Assembly.

Mr. Khattar completed a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree from St. Stephen's College, Delhi and his LLB from Delhi University. He then joined the Indian Administrative Service, serving as:

(b) Managing Director, UP State Industrial Development Corporation (1975–78)

(c) Director, Tea Board of India, London (1979–83)

(d) Chairman, Tea Board, Ministry of Commerce, Government of India (1983–84)

(e) Chairman and Managing Director, UP State Cement Corporation (1984–86)

(f) Secretary, Department of Transport, Uttar Pradesh (UP) & Chairman, UP State Road Transport Corporation (1986–88)

(g) Joint Secretary, Ministry of Steel, Government of India (1988–93) [2]
