Biography

Gordon was born in Jamaica and grew up in New York City after moving to the United States at seven years old with her family. After growing up in Queens and graduating from the New York City public schools system, Gordon attended Hunter College, earning a bachelor’s degree in health education. Later, Gordon earned a master’s degree in guidance and counseling, along with a Post Graduate Professional Diploma in Educational Leadership, both from Queens College.[3][2] She worked in New York City and Long Island public schools for 32 years as a teacher and guidance counselor, and she is a member of the New York State United Teachers union.[4]

As a college student, Gordon enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserves and went on to serve as a platoon leader in Germany during Operation Desert Storm. Along with this, Jackie served as an operations officer at Guantanamo Bay, as a battle captain in Baghdad during the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq, and as Commander of the 310th Military Police Battalion in Afghanistan in 2012. In 2014, Jackie retired from the Army Reserves in 2014. [5]

In 2006, Gordon was elected to the Babylon Town Council, becoming one of only two African Americans who had been elected to town board seats in Suffolk County since the early 1990s.

In 2013, Gordon was named a New York State Senate Woman of Distinction by Charles J. Fuschillo Jr..[3]
