The name Holthees was mentioned for the first time in 1359. It is a composition of the German words hulta (wood) and hees (forest of thicket) The town was founded around a chapel; the Mariakapel. The chapel which now stands in the center of the village dates back from the 16th century. Holthees used to provide military support during the defense of the Land of Cuijk
