Hernán Rodríguez Matte

Hernán Rodríguez Matte (Santiago, Chile, May 16th, 1972) Chilean author, director and screenwriter[1] is principally known for his literary work[2] and his extensive work as a screenwriter. He is the author of the novel Barrio Alto[3] and the creator of the successful television series ‘La Colonia[4][5] , Welcome to Reality[6] and ‘Papá Mono[7][8] among others. He is also the founder of Radio Isla Negra, a global, multi stream, listener supported radio station.

Biography

In the 90s, he achieved great notoriety for his column "La Vida Según Benito[9]"[10] in the missing youth publication Zona de Contacto[11], of El Mercurio. In 2000, he completed his MFA (Master in Screenwriting) at the prestigious American Film Institute in Los Angeles, California; and worked on translating and adapting formats on Sony Pictures Television for the Hispanic market. One of the most successful formats was the creation and development of ‘Bienvenida Realidad[12][13]; a television series commissioned by Sony Pictures[14] Television and aired by Chilean National Television in 2004 and later acquired by Cadena 3, RCN, Sony Spin United States, Rede CNT Brasil and Teleamazonas Ecuador.

In the year of 2005 while based in Chile, he published his first novel titled Barrio Alto[15] under Editorial Alfaguara. The book achieved significant sales successes, but hard literary criticism.

Hernán then began a prolific career as a television screenwriter, writing for hit series such as ‘Casado con Hijos’, ‘Tiempo Final’, ‘La Nany[16]’, ‘Tres son Multitud[17]’, ‘Cartas de Mujer’, ‘El diario secreto de una profesional[18]’, ‘La Colonia’, ‘El reemplazante[19], etc. He later worked as a director on the series ‘Una pareja Dispareja’ with actors Luciano Cruz Coke, Felipe Braun and Delfina Guzmán among others. He is the creator of the successful series ‘La Colonia’, a comedy broadcast by Mega that produced more than 200 episodes and quickly became the only Chilean sitcom sold abroad. In 2011 he was named Head of Development at TVN, and Show Runner for the series ‘El Reemplazante’, which was then awarded the best series of the year[20]. He soon returned to the screen on Channel 13, where he was the creator and executive producer of the successful series ‘Papá Mono’ that reached 32 share points. He has been repeatedly nominated for the Altazor Award[21] as best fiction writer.
