History

The company was founded by Dennis and Ann Ratner in 1974. Ann Ratner was originally from Great Britain.[1] The first salon opened in West Springfield, Virginia.[1]

Since the 1970s,[6] the enterprise has expanded to become the largest privately-held salon chain in the United States, with locations up and down the East Coast, the Chicago metropolitan area, Florida, and New England. Hair Cuttery now encompasses approximately 12,000 associates with over 800 salons in 16 states.[1]

In April 2020 Ratner Companies entered Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The chain was acquired by debtor in possession Hair Cuttery holdings inc DBA Tacit Holdings LLC. The company will be led by current COO Phil Horvath and will close locations as it restructures.[7] Part of the bankruptcy proceedings will be restoring back pay earned by employees in the week before the chain suspended operations during the COVID-19 pandemic.[8][9]

Dennis and Ann Ratner also have other business salons that are somewhat similar to their highest achieving salon, Hair Cuttery. Privately held Ratner Companies operates Hair Cuttery, BUBBLES, Salon Cielo and Spa, ColorWrks, and Salon Plaza. With nearly 1,000 salons, Ratner Companies supports more than 14,000 stylists across 14 states. The main enterprise is Hair Cuttery, an 800-unit value-priced salon chain found on the East Coast and the Chicago area, comprising both company-owned and franchised operations. In 2004, Ratner Companies reported sales of US$204 million.[10]

Hair Cuttery competes with Supercuts, Fantastic Sams, Sport Clips, Great Clips and several other franchised hair salon businesses.
