Hōjō Tsunashige

Hōjō Tsunashige (北条 綱成, 1515 – June 11, 1587) also known as Hōjō Tsunanari was an officer of great skill under the Hōjō clan. The adopted brother of Hōjō Ujiyasu. Around the Kantō region, he fought in many battles supporting the Hōjō, also contributing to the expansion of the domain of Hōjō, he was well known for his fighting skillhe but also an excellent diplomat.[1]

He was known for his soldiers' yellow uniforms, along with outstandingly creative banners.[2] Tsunashige was the castellan (castle lord) in command of Tamanawa Castle and Kawagoe Castle.[1]

During the Siege of Kawagoe Castle, Kawagoe Castle's commander Tsunashige held off the siege until the Hōjō Ujiyasu`s relief force arrived. He got fame by the siege.[1]

In 1571, Fukasawa Castle that Tsunashige defended was surrounded by Takeda Shingen`s large army, Tsunashige held off well but was forced to surrender.[3] He withdrew to his Tamanawa Castle.[3]

After the siege of Fukasawa Castle, Tsunashige spent retired life and he died in 1587.[2] Tsunashige's tomb is at Ryūhō-ji Temple near the castle.[4]
