Grimes Field

Grimes Field (FAA LID: I74) is a city-owned public-use airport located one nautical mile (1.85 km) north of the central business district of Urbana, a city in Champaign County, Ohio, United States.[1] Named for Warren G. Grimes, an aviation lighting forefather. It primarily serves general aviation traffic.[2] Although it is owned by the City of Urbana, Grimes Field is self-supporting.

Facilities and aircraft

Grimes Field covers an area of 329 acres (133 ha) at an elevation of 1,068 feet (326 m) above mean sea level. It has two runways. One runway, designated 2/20 with an asphalt surface measuring 4,400 by 100 feet (1,341 x 30 m).and a second runway, designated 1/19 with a grass surface measuring 3,000 by 100 feet (914 x 30m)[1]

For the 12-month period ending Sept 3, 2016, the airport had 23,360 aircraft operations, an average of 64 per day: 51% transient, 45% local, 2% military and 2% air taxi. At that time there were 55 aircraft based at this airport: 39 single-engine, 11 multi-engine, 1 helicopter and 4 ultralight.[1]

Museums

Several museums operate at Grimes Field.

Champaign Aviation Museum

The airport is home to the Champaign Aviation Museum.[3] Located on the north end of the airport, the museum is known primarily for its ongoing restoration of Champaign Lady, a Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress. It also displays and flies other historical aircraft such as a North American B-25 Mitchell, Douglas C-47 Skytrain, a Stinson 10A, a Fairchild 24 and a Grumman C-1 Trader[4]

The Mid America Flight Museum of Texas Ohio Restoration Wing

A branch of the Mid America Flight Museum of Texas is currently restoring aircraft at Grimes. A 1929 Travel Air 6000 is undergoing a complete restoration, and a Low Wing Stinson Tri-Motor (The only one in existence in the world) is having a wing recovered. [5]

Events

Grimes Field is host to several events each year. Such as: FAA Wings Seminars, an EAA Young Eagles Event, a Military Appreciation Day, a Hot Air Balloon Festival, a July 4th Car Show. The airport also hosts the Mid-Eastern Regional Fly In, (MERFI).
