The Govind Ballabh Pant Social Science Institute (also referred to as GBPSSI) is a research institute located in Jhusi, Prayagraj (Allahabad). Founded and opened in 1980, GBPSSI became a "Constituent College/Institute" of the University of Allahabad in 2005. Courses offered include an MBA in Regional Development, A DPhil, and the first MPhil programme in the University of Allahabad or any of its constituency.[1]

The institute also houses a museum, the Manav Vikas Sangrahalaya (The Museum of Development of Man), with four permanent galleries and occasional temporary exhibits.[2] The permanent galleries feature the cultural archeological history of India, the physical and cultural archeological history of the Ganges river basin, photo exhibits of the history of Hinduism's Bhakti movement, and a gallery featuring the history of migration (forced migration, tricked migration, and willing migration) of the Bhojpuri people from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar to locations around India and eventually to Suriname and the Netherlands. This gallery was created after the completion of a multi-year, multi-university research project involving GBPSSI and universities in Suriname and the Netherlands.[3]

As of 2020, the government of Uttar Pradesh has officially announced and created the "Kumbh Research Centre."[4] As the Kumbh Mela, the largest gathering of people in the world, happens less than 2 km away every 6 years, the Uttar Pradesh Government and GBPSSI Leadership decided to house a permanent research centre at GBPSSI, where research from previous events can be securely stored and available in one central location, and which would sponsor future research into the major event.
