The modern, expansive restaurant is chic, located in the multi-level loft space of a former warehouse, with high ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows.[4][6][8][10][11][12] The restaurant's art collection has its own curator.[12] The restaurant serves over 400 diners a day.[13]

Reviews

In 1994, restaurant critic Gael Greene wrote that it was her favorite restaurant.[14] Bryan Miller of The New York Times gave it three stars in 1985, Molly O’Neill of the Times gave it three stars in 1993, Ruth Reichl of the Times gave it three stars in 1996, and Sam Sifton of the Times awarded it three stars in 2011.[15][16]

In 2013, Zagats gave it a food rating of 4.8, the second-highest food rating in Greenwich Village.[2]

Closed

In march 2020, after 36 years, the restaurant closed. As a reason, the restaurant issued the following statement: "We have been forced to make the very difficult decision to close the Gotham after 36 wonderful years because the unforeseen situation created by the coronavirus has made operation of the restaurant untenable."
