In episode one, the MUAs face their first Professional Assignment – an advertising campaign for sports fashion retailer JD. At the end of the assignment, the judges assess the test shots and decide whether the MUAs work is good enough to make JD’s Christmas Campaign or not. The one MUA who impresses the most is rewarded and remains on set to assist with the make-up for the rest of the campaign. The next day, the MUAs gather at Glow Up HQ to find out which two were judged to have performed the worst on the advertising campaign shoot. They start the day in the red ‘Face Off’ chairs and with a 15-minute time penalty in the next challenge. For these two MUAs, the only way to escape the elimination Face Off at the end of the show is to wow the judges in the creative brief and hope another MUA fails to impress and takes their place. This week’s creative brief sees the MUAs challenged to produce a look on themselves based on their identity. The judges deliberate over which two MUAs produced the weakest looks before revealing who will take on the first elimination Face Off - a make-up skill drill under intense time pressure. In episode 3 it’s show time for the 8 remaining MUAs as they dive into the world of theatrical make-up, treading the boards at London’s West End smash hit The Lion King. The MUAS will need to impress guest judge and The Lion King Global Associate Hair & Make Up Designer, Ashley Roller as she sets them the challenge to precisely replicate the make-up from four of the main characters, meeting the theatre’s meticulously high standard. At the end of the assignment, the made up actors take centre stage on The Lyceum Theatre’s famous set for Ashley, Val and Dominic to assess the make-up. The MUA that impresses most is invited to work alongside Ashley and The Lion King’s prestigious make-up team for the evening’s performance. Those that fail to impress will pay the penalty by starting the next day’s Creative Brief in the red Face Off chairs. This week’s Creative Brief is a revealing one - asking the MUAs to create a look that incorporates a mask that reveals more than it hides. One MUA turns to special effects using artex and dress maker’s pins to create a scold’s bridle, another attempts to pull off a seamless bald cap in a split face transformation that they hope will demonstrate their courage to stay bright no matter what life throws at them and for one MUA the building pressure of the competition proves too much. 124"Episode 4"4 June 2020 (2020-06-04)

In Episode Four the six remaining MUAs are set their boldest assignment yet as they are thrown into the glossy world of fashion editorials and booked on a job for UK’s best-selling gay magazine, Attitude. They’ll be working for Guest judge and leading makeup artist, Andrew Gallimore whose make-up style is renowned for using materials that aren’t strictly cosmetic. Each MUA is assigned a male model and a different fashion trend that their make-up needs to work with, and Attitude magazine’s brief is to deliver big, bold high fashion looks. One MUA gets creative and reaches for the ping pong balls whilst another chooses to be adventurous creating a look with denim and studs. The stakes are high as only one look will be chosen for the editorial’s lead image and if the makeup isn't good enough, the magazine will not include it. The next day in Glow Up HQ sees the arrival of surprise Guest Judge- RuPaul’s very own Michelle Visage. Known for her no nonsense judging Michelle cranks up the pressure as the MUAs are tasked with creating a look inspired by a club culture. The MUAs produce looks that rely on special effects to create a cyber-goth, perfectly placed and blended bald caps, realistic wounds and dripping blood. In Episode Five, the remaining MUAs head to Elstree Studios and enter the world of special effects as they step onto the set of BBC’s Holby City, here they are met by the Head of Prosthetics and this week’s guest judge, Megan Thomas. Megan wants to test the MUAS prosthetics skills so after a short demonstration she gives each MUA an extra from the television programme and a character brief to follow, the extras have been in a fight and it’s the MUA’s job to create realistic wounds, injuries and blood effects with flawless blending of prosthetic edges. The pressure is heightened as the two MUA’s that deliver the most convincing looks will have their work televised and the opportunity to see their actor’s film on set. While some MUAs impress, others struggle with the technical skills required and pay the price by starting the next day’s Creative Brief in the red Face Off chairs. This week’s Creative Brief is a horrifying one as the MUAS are asked to create a look that embodies their worst nightmare, fear or phobia. One MUA goes all out to wow the judges, attempting to use six prosthetics in their look inspired by a parasitic infestation, another battles with a large prosthetic piece to help them convey their phobia of peacocks whilst another MUA gets busy using tin foil and a glue gun to create a DIY eye piece. It’s glitter gloss and glam this week as Stacey Dooley returns to her favourite dancefloor and the MUAs battle it out in Britain’s most famous ballroom at Strictly Come Dancing. This week’s guest judge is BAFTA award winning hair and make-up designer for Strictly Come Dancing, Lisa Armstrong. Lisa’s responsible for creating up to 50 original make-up looks every week and today she has a new team to help design and execute the make-up for Movie Week. Working to the exacting time pressures of a live show the MUAS must deliver make-up that embodies the Strictly brand; lashes, glamour and glitter! Each MUA is allocated a different movie and two characters that they'll have to design a make-up look for. Whoever impresses the most has the opportunity to work with Lisa backstage at the live show whereas those that fail to deliver run the risk of starting the Creative Brief in the red Face Off chairs. With looks including Pokémon and the psychedelic inspired Austin Powers one MUA surpasses Lisa’s expectations and executes the make-up beautifully whilst another MUA’s bad attitude upsets the judges. The next day in Glow Up HQ, the MUAs are asked to transform their model in to a super hero, one MUA pushes their creativity by using a food blender to help create the base to their look whilst another blows the judges away with an amazing illusion make up. It’s the semi-final and just four MUAs remain to battle it out for a place in the Glow Up final. This week’s assignment requires serious flair as the MUAs are booked on a beauty editorial for world renowned photographer and director and this week’s guest judge, Rankin. Rankin’s magazine, The Hunger, is known for pushing the boundaries of fashion, style and make-up and he wants the MUAS to think experimental beauty, express themselves and most importantly inspire him for today’s beauty editorial with the theme The Future. But, that is not all, the shoot will take place in a tank of water so the MUAS need to think carefully how the make-up reacts with water. Each MUA must plan and produce a unique make-up look which fits the theme and works well with the water. Rankin will not only be judging their make-up but also how they work with him to create the perfect image. The stakes are high- if Rankin is happy with the MUA’s final look, the shots will feature in his magazine. But, will the Glow Up semi-finalists be able to keep their cool and make a splash under the watchful eye of one of the world’s best known photographers? The next day in Glow Up HQ, for the first time in the competition, the MUAs face a surprise Creative Brief and are asked to design and create a look based on one of the four classical elements; earth, wind, air and fire. In a bid to make it into the final the MUAs pull out all the stops with looks featuring a silicone mouldable plastic, oriental tattoo style drawings using intricate line work, and a 3D layered look using hair. Once the Creative Briefs have been judged, Val and Dominic must decide which two MUAs will enter the elimination Face Off, with a place in the final at stake the MUAS are asked to pull off a rainbow eye with seamlessly blended colours. Only three MUAS can make it to the Glow Up final.
