George Robert Merrell

George Robert Merrell (1898 St. Louis, Missouri–December 16, 1962)[1] was an American Career Foreign Service Officer who served as Chargé d'Affaires ad interim to Haiti (March 1924 - October 1926) and India, Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary Ethiopia and was then promoted to Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary on June 28, 1949 and Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Afghanistan (1951-1952).[2] In 1941, he was Consul General in Calcutta before his transfer to New Delhi.[3]

Merrell attended the University School for Boys in St. Louis before graduating from Cornell University in 1921. He died of a heart attack while visiting his sister in London.[4]
