Gary Torgow

Gary Torgow is a Detroit businessman active in business, civic, charitable and communal endeavors.

Education and personal life

Torgow has a B.A. degree and a J.D. degree and is married to Malke Torgow. The couple has five children and numerous grandchildren.[1]

Career

Gary Torgow is Chairman of TCF Financial Corporation.[2][3]

Communal and civic activity

Torgow is on the boards of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan,[4] DTE Energy,[5] Community Foundation of Southeastern Michigan,[6] Business Leaders for Michigan,[7] Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit,[8] Downtown Detroit Partnership,[9] and the Wayne State University Foundation.[10] In Torgow's capacity as a vice president of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit he hosted a large gathering to support the Federation at his home.[11]

Torgow has served as chairman of the Detroit Economic Growth Corporation,[12] the Michigan Civil Rights Commission and First Place Bank.[13] On Jan 25, 2019, Governor Gretchen Whitmer designated Torgow as one of her emergency interim successors.[14]

He has received a number of honors and awards including the NAACP Fannie Lou Hamer Award,[15] the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit's Frank Wetsman Young Leadership Award,[16] and the Wayne State University School of Law Outstanding Alumni Award.[17]

He is the author of "Raising the Bar",[18] and "Holy Warrior",[19] and has given numerous talks[20] and lectures throughout the country.[21][22]
