The modern name first appears in Le Morte d'Arthur by Thomas Malory[2], in which it belonged to Sir Gareth, a brother of Sir Gawain and one of the Knights of the Round Table. Malory either based the name on Gahariet (a name found in French Arthurian texts); or the Welsh word gwaredd, meaning "gentleness".[3][4]
The name remains popular in Wales, with the modern form associated with the Welsh hero Geraint.[3][1]
