Galicia en Común

Galicia en Común (English: "Galicia in Common") is a left-wing alliance in Galicia formed by Podemos and United Left (EU) as a successor to the En Marea alliance, which after turning into a party broke up from their three constituent parties in early 2019 as a result of political and leadership differences.[4] The alliance has contested the April 2019 and November 2019 Spanish general elections under the En Común–Unidas Podemos label (English: "In Common–United We Can"), and it also exists as a sub-group within the Unidas Podemos confederal parliamentary group in the Congress of Deputies.[5] In September 2019, Podemos and EU, together with Anova–Nationalist Brotherhood, comprised the Grupo Común da Esquerda (English: "Common Group of the Left" or "Left Common Group") parliamentary group, also shortened as Común da Esquerda (English: "Common the Left" or "Left Common"),[6][7] and the alliance is scheduled to be renewed ahead of the 2020 Galician regional election.[8][9]

History

The political space held by the En Marea party had broke up in January 2019 after internal disputes, after a crisis concerning the election of a new party leadership in late 2018 had resulted in a split between members supporting Luis Villares and En Marea's founding member parties, Podemos, Anova–Nationalist Brotherhood (Anova) and United Left (EU). Villares was elected as new En Marea leader on 24 December 2018 amid accusations of fraud and vote rigging,[10][11] prompting Podemos, Anova and EU to withdraw from En Marea, dubbing it as a "failed" political project.[12][13][14]

Subsequently, Podemos and EU contested the April 2019 general election as an electoral alliance under the En Común–Unidas Podemos brand,[15][16] which for this election also included Equo and Mareas en Común (English: "Tides in Common"), a political organization registered in August 2018 in order to preserve the "Marea" brand after the break up of the En Marea confluence.[17][18][19] After the election, the alliance formed the Galicia en Común sub-group within the Unidas Podemos confederal parliamentary group in the Congress of Deputies.[5] Ahead of the November 2019 general election, the alliance was renewed as a Podemos–EU-only coalition, after Equo had left the alliance to run with Más País and the local mareas had chosen not to participate in the new electoral contest.[20][21][22] Anova refused to join the alliance in neither general election, citing difficulties in reaching an agreement for an electoral "broad front".[23][24][25]

In September 2019, MPs from Podemos, EU and Anova in the Parliament of Galicia broke up from the still-existing En Marea parliamentary group and formed the Grupo Común da Esquerda group,[26][27] which considered itself a successor to the Galician Left Alternative alliance.[28] While it has been pointed out by members that the group would be a key for the constitution of a "a candidacy of rupturist unity" succeeding the late En Marea coalition ahead of the next Galician election, it was noted that the parliamentary group's name did not advance the denomination of any prospective electoral brand.[29][30]

The alliance was reformed with Podemos, EU, Anova and the local mareas—such as Marea Atlántica and Compostela Aberta—ahead of the 2020 Galician regional election.[31][9][32]
