Frederick Hamilton (Donegal politician)

The Honourable Frederick Hamilton (c. 1663 – 13 December 1715),[1] was an Irish politician.

Birth and origins

Frederick was born about 1663 in Ireland. He was the eldest son of Gustavus Hamilton and his wife Elizabeth Brooke. His father was the 1st Viscount Boyne. His mother was a daughter of Sir Henry Brooke.[2]

He heads the list of siblings below as the eldest:

  1. Frederick (died 1715), the subject of this article;
  2. Gustavus of Red Wood, King's County (died 1734), who would be M.P. for Donegal;[3]
  3. Elizabeth who married Charles Lambart;[4] and
  4. Henry (1692–1743), who would be M.P. for Donegal.[5]

Early life

In 1707, he entered the Irish House of Commons for Donegal County, the same constituency his father also represented, and sat as Member of Parliament until his death in 1715.[1] Hamilton was appointed Vice-Admiral of Ulster in 1710.[6]

Marriage and children

On 1 September 1707, he married Sophia Hamilton, daughter of James Hamilton and sister of James Hamilton, 1st Earl of Clanbrassil.[8] They had two sons and two daughters.[8] The older son Gustavus succeeded his grandfather as Viscount Boyne.[8]
