FAMEL

FAMEL - Fabrica de Produtos Metalicos Lda, was one of the largest Portuguese moped manufacturers between 1960s and 1980s.

Based in Águeda, the company built several models using Zündapp engines starting in 1962.[1] Their most popular motorcycle was the XF-17 started in 1975.[1] Presented in 1975 and was sold till the mid-1990s, it was a 5 speed 125 cc (7.6 cu in) motorcycle copied from Suzuki Stinger T125 model produced from 1969 to 1971 that made 15 hp (11 kW) (claimed) @ 8,500rpm.[2]

As the increased purchasing power in their home country Portugal made automobiles more and more popular, the moped market became smaller and the strong competition from European and Japanese imported models forced bankruptcy.

Their last product was the world's first electric scooter, developed in 1993.[1] FAMEL Electric or Electron, totally produced with Portuguese technology in partnership with EFACEC. The entire (small) production was sold to La Poste before FAMEL stopped production. The following year, Peugeot presented their Scoot'elec based on the same technology.

They declared bankruptcy in 2002. Then in 2014 they announced a revitalization and a future prototype. They announced plans for production to be by 2017 or 2018.[1]
