EurOmnis

EurOmnis is a week-long technical conference held annually in Europe for developers of the Omnis Studio application development tool. The conference is organised for and by the Omnis developer community and is an opportunity for developers to exchange their knowledge and experiences of using the Omnis Studio development environment. The conference features speakers from around the world who are regarded by the Omnis developer community as experts in their chosen field and who agree to share their knowledge freely and on an impartial basis. The conference is organised by the member owned company OmnisWorld.org after the conference creator, Fred Brinkman returned to the spiritual world in 2011.

Conference Format

In past years the EurOmnis conference has followed a structured session-based programme, but starting in 2007 centres on smaller sessions that encourage more two-way communication. Main goal for the format change is offering new ways for conference attendees to really learn. The only tracks to remain in structured sessions are the so-called ‘Studio 101 Course’, usually held by David Swain, author, trainer and long-term Omnis developer, which shows beginners the basics of using Omnis Studio to develop enterprise applications, and the so-called 'SQL-101 Course', a complete course on connecting Studio to different back-ends, hosted by Joe Maus.

History

EurOmnis was created in 1999 by Fred Brinkman and Nick Harris as a forum for Omnis developers from all over the world to learn and develop new ideas and techniques for using Omnis Studio. It was the follow-up of a highly successful conference put together by Bruno Huyssen in 1998, a conference now known in the Omnis developer community as 'The Woodstock' of all Omnis conferences.

In March 2002 the conference format was brought to London, Ontario, in Canada by David Ferri, Clifford Illkay and Fred Haislmaier under the AmerOmnis Banner. Again one year later the EurOmnis format was ported to Australia, laying the foundations for the OzOmnis conferences.

In 2003 Gavin Foster took over as joint organizer of EurOmnis as Fred Brinkman retired from the role due to other obligations, in 2007 the latter returned as conference organizer, deploying the 'EurOmnis, The Next Generation'-concept, abandoning the 'class'-format and introducing smaller and more intimate sessions, giving attendees a possibility to choose topics of interest and put together their own conference. EurOmnis, The Next Generation presents attendees with opportunities to get the information they want or solve the problems they have. Formal conferences have never been a place to solve problems but a place to listen to people doing presentations. EurOmnis, The Next Generation, changed that.
