Elsie M. Burrows

Elsie May Burrows (née Pearson) (14 September 1913–26 August 1986) was an English botanist who made significant contributions to British postwar phycology.[1][2] Her primary area of research was macroalgal ecology, focusing particularly on Fucus, a genus of brown algae, and Chlorophyta, a division of the green algae.[2]

Borrows graduated with a B.Sc. from the University College in Leicester. She married in 1936 and assumed a post at Liverpool University, where she spent the remainder of her career. She subsequently received her Ph.D. in 1948.[2]

A founder member of the British Phycological Society, she served as the organization's vice president from 1957 to 1958.[2]

In 1951, she began collecting data for her monograph, Seaweeds of the British Isles. The manuscript was completed shortly before her death and published posthumously in 1991.[1] A number of specimens collected and identified by her for the Seaweed Mapping Scheme remain in the herbarium at the Ulster Museum.[1]
