Dom Ninian Sloane

Dom Ninian Sloane was born as Stephen Gerard Sloane on August 5 1908 in Liverpool. His parents Patrick and Mary Sloane were Irish. He grew up in Gourock, Scotland and was educated at St Columba's School and at Glasgow School of Art. He was ordained a priest in the Benedictines on 15 August 1946 whereupon he took the name Ninian. He was based initially at Prinknash Abbey in Gloucestershire. He became one of the five pioneers who in 1948 restarted the rebuilding of Pluscarden Priory (now Pluscarden Abbey) in Morayshire, Scotland.[1] While there he was given charge of the stained glass department and created many windows for churches and other buildings chiefly in Scotland. Here he trained many artists in stained glass. [2] He is the uncle of Paul Sloane (author) and Nick Sloane (athlete).
