Dil Bahadur Chettri

Lance Havildar Dil Bahadur Chettri MVC (21 August 1950 – ) was a soldier in the Indian Army notable for his participation in the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. He was awarded the Maha Vir Chakra posthumously, for bravery in action.

Personal life

Dil Bahadur Chettri was born on 21 August 1950 in Gharti Gaon, Matta Dang district, Nepal. His father's name was Shri Lok Bahadur Chettri.

Military career

Chettri was recruited into the 4th Battalion of the 5th Gorkha Rifles Regiment on 21 August 1968.

During the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, Chettri's unit 4/5 GR, was deployed in the Easter Sector. In what would later be known as the Battle of Atgram,[2] his unit was tasked with the capture of Atgram, which was a well defended position with concrete bunkers and well sited machine guns covering all approaches. It was defended by 2 companies of Pakistani Army and paramilitary forces, which were supported by 3 inch mortars, Medium machine guns, a field battery and a 6-pounder gun. On 21 November 1971, the assault to capture this position was launched. The battle was tough and bitter, with use of khukris and grenades. L/Havildar Chettri showed gallantry of the highest levels by charging enemy bunker and another and killed 8 enemy troops with just his khukri. He also captured one enemy MMG, thus contributing towards achievement of the objectives.[3][4] L/Havildar Nar Bahadur Ale was awarded the Maha Vir Chakra for his bravery.
