Plot
Ravi Fernando urges his son, Awantha Fernando, to break a school cricket record. Ravi watches in the coaches box with Mr Ekanayake. Samalka Samadhi is late for the match, which angers Awantha. While playing cricket, Anuhas Fernando sees Samalka and becomes intrigued. Their first major encounter is when Anuhas collides with Samalka on her bike. Awantha and his friends beat him up. Ravi teases Anuhas; angry, Anuhas goes home and asks his mother Udeni how she met Ravi. She tells her story in the presence of her niece, Dewmi Uththara.
Awantha is abusive towards Samalka, who in turn dislikes him. Her motorbike breaks down, and Anuhas (who works at his Uncle Ananda's garage) fixes it. Awantha confronts him for talking with Samalka, who becomes friends with Anuhas. Dewmi has fallen in love with Anuhas for some time, however, Anuhas only sees her as a sister. Ravi and Amisha want to help Awantha make the national team and marry the wealthy Samalka. Neither Samalka nor Awantha knows that Samalka has an inheritance of shares. Amisha visits Udeni's juice bar to insult Udeni and Anuhas, and Ananda regularly quarrels with Ravi.
At the boys' school, Anuhas is friends with "Mike" and "Chubby", a duo of comical characters who love free food, and Mike trying to be the "Ladies Man". Anuhas is in the same year level as Awantha, who taunts Anuhas. Awantha is supported by his friends Sheran and Danisha.
When Anuhas prevents Awantha's friend, Danisha, from being beaten by his girlfriend's brother; Danisha leaves Awantha and befriends Anuhas. Anuhas is beaten and hospitalised by the men Anuhas defended Danisha from. Samalka visits him and is seen by Udeni and Ananda. Anuhas learns the truth about Samalka from her diary: her father is dead, and her mother is in a mental institution, much to Samalka's annoyance.
Dewmi feels uneasy when Samalka and Anuhas are together, as she realises that Anuhas does not spend time with her as he used and devotes his time to Samalka. Ananda and his wife approve of the relationship between their son, Dhanuka, and the schoolgirl Malki. When Samalka's birthday comes around, Anuhas plans a surprise birthday party for Samalka and gives her a dress. Dewmi, worried and saddened that Anuhas has gone to host the birthday party, tries to bring him home by feigning an emergency, in order to separate Anuhas from Samalka. This results in Anuhas being angry with Dewmi, saddening her more.
Udeni is reluctant to allow Anuhas to play in the school cricket team, out of fear he will be mocked and his potential overlooked, but Ananda convinces her to send Anuhas to the school cricket team, demonstrating exceptional talent and Coach Ekanayake publicly acknowledges his potential. Seeing that Coach Ekanayake is starting to favour Anuhas, Ravi replaces the coach with a crony, Lionel Sadun. He discriminates and condescends to the players, especially Anuhas, in an effort to make Anuhas hate cricket and leave the team.
While this is happening, Awantha and Sheran notice Dewmi leaving the tuition class one night and decide to jokingly catcall, but then Anuhas comes on his bike and picks Dewmi up. The girls and boys school partner up to put together a concert, featuring skits, songs and dances. This is one of the rare times that the boys and girls interact on school grounds. On the day, Udeni and Dewmi's family arrive to watch when there is a mix up of seating arrangements; which happen to be Ravi and Ameesha's seat. In the proceedings, Udeni has a flashback to a time when she sang "Lanwela Wassanaye" (the theme song) and Ravi snuck in to watch her. Within the concert, Samalka and Dewmi are in a school singing contest, singing their respective songs "Supem Wee" and "Nidi Nena". Awantha bribes a judge to let Samalka win. When Samalka finds out, she gives her a prize to Dewmi.
Awantha warms up to Dewmi. Awantha gets low grades, but Anuhas' are high. Dewmi begins to taunt Samalka. Anuhas does not make a team organised for a friendly match. A new girl, Lihini, attends the school. Awantha breaks Anuhas' bat. Samalka offers to help him buy a replacement, but he refuses. Amisha drives Udani's juice bar out of business, and Anuhas must go to work.
Awantha flirts with Dewmi, and Coach Ekanayake returns to school. Anuhas organises a car wash to help Samalka buy a motorbike.
Dewmi sees Awantha bleeding in a three-wheeler and brings him to the hospital. She tries to leave, but the police want to know what happened. Dewmi lies that he was in an auto accident, but he was in a gang fight. The police visit Dewmi's house, which angers her father.
During a school trip, Ekanayake arranges for the cricket team to play a one-day game with an Indian school team. The teachers discuss a new captain since Awantha has broken Anuhas' bat, gloves and pads. Anuhas becomes the captain.
When it is time to leave for the match, the bus tires are vandalised. Samalka and Anuhas bring her mother to a neurologist.
Anuhas saves Ravi when he is beaten; after several days in the hospital, Ravi goes abroad, apologising to Udeni by mail for his mistakes and acknowledging her and Anuhas' love before he dies of a heart attack in Australia.
A school committee plans to help with his funeral. Udeni wants Ananda to attend the funeral, but he is worried that Ameesha will send them away; Ameesha attempts to, outraged that Ravi has provided equally for Anuhas and Awantha. Awantha is courteous to them. Anuhas does not want to accept being Ravi's son, but Awantha persuades him to go. Awantha and Anhas are pallbearers. Udeni tells Anuhas that Ravi loved him and Awantha equally. Awantha overhears, and as Anuhas takes Udeni home he grieves at the pyre.
Anuhas and Awantha's friendship strengthens as time passes as a result of Ravi's death. Menaka, a shareholder of Ravi's company attempts to get the ownership of the company by creating misunderstandings about the company to the Fernando family so that they will sell it out. However, due to Awantha's and Ravi's father's (Rex Kodippile) best interest in the company, Menaka finds it hard to go with his plan when he gets to know that Awantha will be the next chairman of the company and his grandfather will be the temporary chairman until Awantha's arrival. Over time, Awantha and Dewmi fall in love, which then creates misunderstandings between Udeni and Ananda and as well as between Ameesha and Awantha.
Dewmi and her friend, Malintha was tried to trick Awantha by saying that those two were going to marry. Dhanuka and Aruni get married with a grand and lovely wedding.
Awantha decided to leave home, after a conflict between him, Ameesha and her brother, Dilan. Anuhas saved Awantha, who gets kidnapped by some murderers.
